What This Booklet Can Do For You
When I began playing the accordion in public, interviewers would ask me “Why on Earth would you want to play the accordion?” Then, after a year or so, they started asking me, “Do people ever ask you why you play the accordion?” Then about a year later, they started asking “Do other interviewers ever ask you if people ever ask you why you play the accordion?” Lately, they’ve been asking me “How can I learn to play the accordion, too?”
I wanted to point people towards a really good instructional booklet, but I found that amongst the thousands of titles flooding the market, there was nothing that really addressed the most important issues, nothing that taught the hard lessons that I had learned through trial and often grievous error.
And so, out of a humanitarian desire to contribute to the well-being of the human race, I wrote this booklet.
Obviously, this book alone won’t make you an accordion player. Some people will never be accordion players. That’s good. We couldn’t have everyone in the world being accordion players. Who would grow the food? Who would perform surgery? Who would hand out prison sentences to teenagers for skipping school? And who would guard those prisons?
But if you’ve ever wondered, even a little, about how to really Be an Accordion Player, then this book is for you. This book has everything you need to know to get started, from how to choose your first accordion, to common questions about what the buttons do (and don’t do), to tips on how to handle difficult travel and performance situations, and everything in between. I warn you now that some of the accordion lessons come in the form of instructive anecdote, or parable. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s for your own good.
Whether this booklet succeeds or fails depends on you. Who knows — perhaps, one day, it will be the bible of serious accordion players everywhere, or perhaps in time, it will be like the bible itself — the source text of an institutional religion with millions of followers, who will splinter into warring sects over issues of interpretation.
